What's your thoughts on this? TBH I'm not even sure about IVF so I feel a little uncomfortable adding even more variables into it

I'm not sure either, I can understand why you wouldn't want a child to have such conditions, but messing with nature too much doesn't always work.

No I'm not sure either

I don't have a problem with ivf, if I'd have needed to its a route I would have taken to have children. Ethics aside the idea of using mitochondria from a donor is a great idea, mitochondria in cells are used to power growth and movement, although genetic material is held in mitochondria it is minescule compaired to the genetic material held in the nucleus.
And in theory it will help reduce defects in a child.

I guess if I the thought of saving for PDG crossed my mind an I was comfortable with that then this is no different really.

I wouldn't have a problem with it... if it meant I could guarantee I had a healthy (or healthier) baby because of it then i'd do it without a shadow of a doubt. However the more medically advanced "we" become in genetics and replacing faulty genes the more likely it is to easily have "designer" babies so hmmm I think it's great that things like this can be done I'm not sure if it's good for the human race ethically.

Like Kell said though with PGD lots pf people disagree with it and most places don't allow it other than for medical reasons (ie. to avoid certain diseases that are carried only on the X or Y chromosome) but it is done for choosing sex in Cyprus so what's to stop people being able to choose the eye colour and hair colour and so on and so on.

See I said right from the start that I wouldn't have IVF and would adopt if we couldn't have kids.

Jade choosing the sex makes me really uncomfortable as well

I'm not too sure but like others said I also would have gone to any length to have my babies.

I think choosing the sex for medical reasons is fine.

For none medical my initial thought is NO way but then who am I to judge? I'm extremely lucky to have had girl - boy - girl xx

I'd be a bit uncomfortable with this because I am about IVF generally (although have no problem with other people having it) but not its more just people choosing the sex they want. Think of the chaos it could cause in certain cultures that favour one sex over another

mmm yes but then if people want a boy or a girl and they can afford to have the PGD to choose the gender isn't it better than continuing to have children that they don't want (I know this is highly unlikely as all children are loved but you know what I mean) you know keep trying and trying and hope for the best or just have the one child of the gender they choose?

I'm not sure but like Kell I have thought about choosing the gender of a baby so I don't think it's wrong but I can see how bad it could be.

but this artice about IVF isn't about having a preference it's about preventing a medical condition which I think is totally understandable and should be allowed.

I've got no problem with other people doing it Jade. Just personally makes me uncomfortable. I suppose as well that I just can't imagine wanting a particular sex that much

Yeah I know the article is about medical things but science intervening quite so much makes me uncomfortable anyway. However, no doubt if I carried some of those genes then I might think differently

There is that as well. Just the thought of having to have injections every day would be enough to put me off

I can understand what you girls are saying and if I just had girls I'd have been tempted for a boy. But it's a worry for those cultures who prefer boys as girls are considered worthless.

Maybe each case would need looking at separately.

I couldn't imagine spending that much to pick the sex. I've never cared what I have and if I end with a boy next time I'd be happy

I think gender desire isnt something everyone goes through, but I have to say mine didn't rear it's ugly head until after Charlie was born and from what I have experienced with many other women who have had it also it's been the case for them to, for me the reality of Being able to afford pgd wouldn't have happened, I was very lucky that Lily happened naturally for us, I would have definatly gone on to have more children had she been a boy.

Speaking as someone who has actually gone through the Ivf process, this new development isnt something Id go for. I can understand why some might though. For us we have no choice but to use Ivf as a means to have a baby, it does even now feel very odd and un natural to know exactly when our embryos was conceived and that we never even had sex for it to happen. Just Ivf between me and o/h is as far as Id ever take it.
